Hi All, I'm sending out a third, and most probably last, newsletter concerning last minute arrangements for the Indaba. Mostly I'd like to remind you of some of the more important issues raised in the previous newsletter, but also there is some additional information. Cheers, Craig ==================================================================== IndabaII Newsletter 3 - a few bits more ======================================= Contents: 1 - conference proceedings - $15 2 - getting to the park a - the bus (only one) - check the list of names - are you on it? b - the vans and private cars c - route to the park (enter through Malelane gate) 3 - the park a - malaria medication b - things to bring c - weather d - night drives (check the list if names - are you on it?) e - camp times 4 - national drinks 5 - new info on web page 6 - contact info -------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 - conference proceedings As was done after the `First Small Molecules Indaba - Fundamental Principles of Molecular Modelling', a book of proceedings will be published. This will be available for a meagre $15 to delegates who order it. -------------------------------------------------------------------- 2 - getting to the park -------------- a - the bus The bus to the park will depart from Johannesburg International Airport at 10h00am sharp. Anyone still wanting to take the bus, but likely to miss this bus due to a late flight, and who has not already given us their flight details, must please send us their flight details as soon as possible. Remember that the information kiosk in the middle of the arrivals hall (after checking out of customs) is the primary point of contact. There will be people there with "Indaba II" boards. We no longer will have a second bus leaving from the airport, but have made smaller arrangements for those few arriving 'slightly' late. We have assumed that almost everyone requiring transport has made final arrangements by now. I have below a bus list. It is probably not the final one, but could you all please just check that your names are on the list, and contact us urgently if you're supposed to be on the bus, but I don't have you here. Also, if I do have your name down, and you're no longer taking the bus, please, PLEASE, tell us. BUS LIST: name No. ----------------------------- Amann 1 Bombicz 1 Braga 1 Brammer 1 Comba 1 Csoregh 2 Cundari 1 de Kock 1 Figgis 1 Green 1 Grepioni 1 Irving 1 Jircitano 1 Koinuma 5 Krause 1 Krueger 1 Larsen 2 Leiserowitz 1 Leusen 1 MacSweeney 1 Morgat 1 Ogilvie 1 Portalone 1 Reynolds 1 Richter 1 Sommerer 1 Sutcliffe 1 van Meurs 2 Vassilyeva 1 Wendt 1 -------------- b - the vans and private cars A number of people are taking private cars and there are two small vans going as well. These arrangements allow for the few people who have already asked to leave from Johannesburg itself, as opposed to the airport, and other alternative arrangements. -------------- c - route to the park It is strongly recommended that you enter the park at the Malelane Gate. We will provide the park wardens at this gate information concerning Indaba attendees, but a park entrance fee will still be payable. If there is any problem, please ask for Johann or Marie Els, who are the managers at the Malelane gate. Those traveling on the bus will have the park entrance payed for them, as it is included in the bus fee, but all others are expected to pay for the park entrance at the gate as they arrive. Please see the previous newsletter for prices. Since the Skukuza Camp gates close at 18h00, please arrive at Malelane gate with enough time to travel the ~75 km to the camp (speed limit in the park is restricted to 50km/h on tar roads and 40km/h on untarred roads). To get to Malelane Gate, take the N4 east from Pretoria, through Witbank and Nelspruit. The turn off should be some 80+km after Nelspruit. From Johannesburg Drive directly to Witbank, and take the N4 from there. -------------------------------------------------------------------- 3 - the park -------------- a - malaria medication As mentioned before, the Kruger Park is in an area known for Malaria. The August period, however, is considered a reasonably safe time of the year, and many people are content to use mosquito repellent only. However, we do recommend that you rather be safe than sorry, and take some form of malaria medication. We recommended that you consult a local doctor, and obtain medication before leaving for South Africa. However, the park shop claims to stock malaria medication suitable to the area, and so you should be able to purchase it after you arrive. -------------- b - things to bring Please bring torches (flashlights). Lighting is provided between the huts, but not absolutely everywhere. Don't forget the national drinks! We'd like to ask everyone, and the international guests in particular, to bring along a bottle of your favorite 'national' drink. We will have an opportunity for all to present their country in it's best flavor. -------------- c - weather I'm not going to repeat the extensive forecast I gave in the previous newsletter, but would like to tell you about some maximum, and minimum temperatures I heard recently. Apparently Skukuza had a range of 1 - 30 (degrees Celsius of course) in just one day this week. That means very chilly at night, and very hot in the day. I don't remember anything nearly that extreme last time, but I think you should still ensure that you have a range of cloths, just in case. -------------- d - night drives (check the list if names - are you on it?) After the email announcement I made almost two weeks ago I received a flood of emails booking places in the night drives, within two days more than half the places were booked, and so we decided to prebook the maximum available 76 places (40 on the Monday and 36 on the Wednesday). This means that there are still a few places available for the night drives. I've included the list below. Please check that your booking is on the list. If it is not, please email me to book. If it is on the list and should not please also email me. There is obviously a possibility that there will still be places by the time we all arrive in Skukuza, but by the way the booking has been going so far, I seriously doubt it. I know I've mentioned this three times already. Demi has asked me to tell you that this doesn't have to be hard booze. We'll accept medium booze (like wine) as well. We are not aiming for a heavy drinking session, but a really cultural educational evening (beautiful euphamism, don't you think). -------------------------------------------------------------------- 5 - new info on web page The web page has been updated with the latest programme. There were a few small title changes and time adjustments, but otherwise it looks pretty much the same as before. Additional info includes an updated delegate list. Country demographics show delegates from 16 different countries and five continents: Britain 6 Israel 2 Switzerland 1 Ukraine 1 Australia 2 Zambia 1 France 3 United States 6 Sweden 1 Germany 6 Netherlands 1 Japan 2 South Africa 32 Hungary 1 Italy 3 Denmark 1 Also, there is a link to all newsletters sent out to delegates over the weeks proceeding the conference. So if you did not get one of the preceeding two newsletters, look at the web page. http://www.gh.wits.ac.za/indaba -------------------------------------------------------------------- 6 - Contact Info (as always) Please use the WWW page for primary information.
